The VDA recommendation for steel flat products for cold forming is finished in the VDA 239-100 material specification. In addition to the areas already presented, this material specification also contains dual-phase, TRIP, complex phase, ferritic-bainitic and martensitic steels.

Dual phase steels (DP)

The microstructure of dual phase steels consists mainly of ferrite and martensite and allows for the additional presence of bainite with increasing strength. At a given high tensile strength dual phase steels show a low yield ratio (Re/Rm) and a strong work hardening capacity. Therefore, dual phase steels are especially suited for forming operations with high stretching portions.

Dual phase steels with improved formability (DH)

The microstructure of dual phase steels with improved formability consists mainly of ferrite and martensite and small amounts of bainite and retained austenite. At a given high tensile strength dual phase steels show a low yield ratio (Re/Rm) and a strong work hardening capacity. Therefore, dual phase steels are especially suited for forming operations with high stretching portions.

TRIP steels (TR)

TRIP (Transformation Induced Plasticity) or retained austenite steels have a fine-grained ferritic-bainitic microstructure with embedded retained austenite. Small portions of martensite can also be present. During plastic deformation retained austenite transforms to martensite and leads to a strong work hardening (TRIP effect). High tensile strengths with high values of the uniform elongation can be achieved. The combination of work and bake hardening results in high component strengths.
TRIP steels are suited for stretch forming and deep drawing where high press and blankholder forces and a strong springback effect have to be considered.

Complex phase steels (CP)

Complex phase steels are characterized by a multiphase microstructure containing mostly a ferriticbainitic matrix whereas martensite, tempered martensite, retained austenite and pearlite can be present as additional phases. The extremely fine-grained microstructure is generated by retarded recrystallization or precipitation of micro-alloying elements. Compared to dual phase steels they show a higher yield ratio, lower work hardenability and good hole expansion ratios.

Ferritic-bainitic steels (FB)

Ferritic-bainitic steels are characterized by a matrix of ferrite or strengthened ferrite containing bainite or strengthened bainite. The high strength of the matrix is caused by grain refinement, precipitation of micro-alloying elements and a high dislocation density.

Martensitic steels (MS)

Martensitic steels have a mainly martensitic microstructure with small amounts of ferrite and/or bainite and thus a very high strength. Drawability is limited; these steel grades are more suited for bending processes like roll forming.

Nomenclature of multiphase steels

Multiphase steels are defined by the type of rolling, the minimum yield strength in MPa with the abbreviation “Y”, the minimum tensile strength in MPa with the abbreviation
“T” (longitudinal direction) and the steel type, see also above tables.

Example:
VDA 239 – CR330Y590T-DP-GA50 / 50-U

Cold-rolled dual-phase steel with minimum yield strength 330 MPa and minimum tensile strength 590 MPa, hot-dip coated with a zinc-iron alloy coating with a coating weight of at least 50 g / m² per side, surface quality for non-outer skin or interior parts.

More informations about the possible surfaces and coatings for the DP and multiphase steels according to the VDA 239-100 can be found under the respective menu item.

First details can be found in the tables at the top of the page. In addition, you can download the complete excerpt from our Quality Guide (QG) with the mechanical and chemical values for the VDA239-100 via the previous link.

The steel grades described can be supplied as coil, slitted coils, sheets and blank.
