Uniform steel standards of Volkswagen AG – Technical overview

Volkswagen AG, which includes renowned car brands such as Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche and Ducati as well as commercial vehicle manufacturers Scania and MAN, uses a consolidated system of steel standards. In view of this large group, it is essential to standardize the required steel grades in order to ensure efficiency, quality and rapid availability. The common steel standards of Volkswagen AG are briefly presented below. These can be supplied by the company at short notice as coils, slit strip or sheets.

VW50065 – Flat steel products for cold forming

Based on VDA material sheet 239-100, this standard covers the classification of steels for cold forming. This includes:

Mild steels according to VDA 239-100
Hot-rolled micro-alloyed steels according to VDA 239-100
Cold-rolled micro-alloyed steels according to VDA 239-100
High-strength IF and bake-hardening steels in accordance with VDA 239-100
Dual-phase and multiphase steels VDA
Surfaces and coatings according to VDA

This standard ensures that the materials are optimally prepared for the complex forming processes in automotive production.

VW50060-1 – Cold rolled dual-phase steels

There are two variants for dual-phase steels within the VW50060-1 standard:

Uncoated and electrolytically galvanized variants:
The grades are designated here based on the minimum yield strength.
Typical grades include:

HC260X (comparable with HCT450X)
HC300X (HCT500X)
HC340X (HCT590X)
HC450X (HCT780X)
HC600X (HCT980X)
HC660X (HCT980X-HY, for high yield strength).

Hot-dip coated (hot-dip galvanized) variants:
The designation here is also analogous to the minimum yield strength, for example:

HC260XD (comparable with HCT450XD)
HC300XD (HCT500XD)
HC340XD (HCT590XD)
HC450XD (HCT780XD)
HC600XD (HCT980XD)
HC660XD (HCT980XD-HY).

The choice of variant – whether uncoated/electrolytically galvanized or hot-dip coated – depends on the requirements for corrosion protection and other specific application conditions.

TL 1550 – Cold-rolled strip for defined yield strengths for cold forming

The TL 1550 standard refers to cold-rolled strip that is supplied either uncoated or surface-finished. These products are manufactured with a defined yield strength and are ideally suited for cold forming processes. Typical designs are

TL1550-220Am
TL1550-220+ZE
TL1550-220+Z
TL1550-220+ZF

These variants offer precise coordination of mechanical properties and enable exact material selection for specific manufacturing processes.

The uniform standardization of steel grades ensures that Volkswagen AG’s diverse production processes can be carried out efficiently and to the highest quality. The comprehensive range – from malleable cold-forming steels to high-strength, galvanized dual-phase steels – makes it possible to precisely meet the various requirements of global automotive and commercial vehicle production.
