The recommendation of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) for flat steel products for cold forming is defined in material sheet VDA 239-100. This standard covers a variety of low-alloy and micro-alloy steels, including:
Properties and material composition
The high strength of these steels is achieved by selective alloying with niobium, titanium and vanadium. These elements can be added individually or in combination. Alternatively, carbon-manganese concepts with grain refinement are also used.
Thanks to their specific properties, low-alloy and micro-alloy steels are high-strength materials. Their designation is based on:

Processing and finishing
To improve edge elongation and bending properties, microalloyed steels can be specified as killed steels with grain refinement through controlled sulphide inclusions (abbreviation “LAS”). The targeted control of the shape and proportion of manganese sulphide inclusions is achieved by using calcium or rare earth metals such as cerium. This leads to small, globular particles that ensure optimum properties.
Typical areas of application
Further details, including mechanical and chemical properties of the materials in accordance with VDA 239-100, can be found in our Quality Guides (QG). You can download these via the corresponding link.
