Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel S350GD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a high-strength structural steel that has been specifically developed for demanding applications in structural engineering and building construction. With the material number 1.0529, the minimum yield strength Rp0.2 is 350 N/mm², placing S350GD in the upper strength classes of hot-dip galvanized structural steels. Hot-dip galvanizing ensures a homogeneous zinc coating on the surface, which protects the steel against corrosion in the long term. Thanks to six different coating variants – +Z, +ZF, +ZA, +ZM, +AZ and +AS – the material can be optimally adapted to the specific environmental and stress conditions.

Properties

S350GD combines high strength with excellent ductility and long-lasting corrosion protection. The most important key mechanical values can be found in the table above.

These characteristic values enable reliable load-bearing capacity even under dynamic or impact loads. The hot-dip galvanized surface (+Z) offers solid basic corrosion protection. Due to the variants

+Z (pure galvanized):
Standard corrosion protection for general conditions.
+ZF (zinc-iron):
Improved coating adhesion and increased resistance to mechanical stress.
+ZA (zinc-aluminium):
Optimized resistance in atmospheric environments.
+ZM (zinc-magnesium):
Extended protection in maritime and saline zones through passivating behavior.
+AZ (aluminum-zinc):
Combination of heat resistance and corrosion protection, ideal for high surface temperatures.
+AS (aluminum-silicon):
Especially for applications with extreme temperature influences and high corrosion loads.

can also be used to create customized protection profiles. For example, +ZF increases the adhesion of the zinc coating, +ZA and +ZM improve corrosion resistance in industrial and maritime atmospheres respectively, +AZ combines heat resistance with corrosion protection, and +AS offers maximum protection at high temperatures or in chemically aggressive environments. In addition, S350GD has a homogeneous microstructure, good weldability and excellent dimensional stability, which ensures precise further processing in cutting, bending and welding processes.

Applications

Thanks to its high strength and reliable corrosion protection, S350GD is used in numerous construction applications:

Load-bearing steel structures: Frames, columns and beams in hall, bridge and hall apron construction.
Roof and façade systems: trapezoidal and standing seam profiles for industrial and commercial buildings with high weather resistance.
Drainage systems: gutters, downpipes and rainwater barrels that remain durable even in salty or urban environments.
Solar mounting systems: Substructures for photovoltaic and solar thermal applications where low maintenance and high load-bearing capacity are required.
Sandwich and composite panels: Wall and ceiling elements for industrial halls and logistics centers that require high rigidity and durability.

The wide range of coating variants allows maintenance cycles to be significantly extended and life cycle costs to be reduced.

Conclusion

Hot-dip galvanized steel S350GD in accordance with EN 10346 is a high-performance solution for modern construction projects where high strength, good formability and long-term corrosion protection are required. With a minimum yield strength of 350 N/mm² and a tensile strength of at least 420 N/mm², S350GD ensures maximum load-bearing capacity even under extreme conditions. The six available coating types allow precise adaptation to a wide range of environmental and application scenarios – from temperate interiors to aggressive coastal regions or thermally stressed components. Construction companies and planners thus benefit from a durable, economical and technically mature material solution that meets the increasing demands of structural steel construction.
