Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel S420GD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a high-strength structural steel that was developed for demanding applications in structural engineering and building construction. With the material number 1.0239, S420GD has a minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of 420 N/mm² and is therefore one of the steels in the upper strength classes. The hot-dip galvanizing process produces a uniform zinc coating that efficiently protects the steel against corrosion and significantly increases its service life under changing weather conditions. Available coatings are +Z (pure galvanized), +ZF (zinc-iron), +ZA (zinc-aluminium), +ZM (zinc-magnesium) and +AZ (aluminium-zinc), with which the material can be optimally adapted to specific application environments.

Properties

S420GD combines high strength with sufficient ductility and excellent corrosion protection. The above-mentioned characteristics ensure that S420GD offers reliable load-bearing capacity even under high static or dynamic loads. The hot-dip galvanized coating forms a robust sacrificial anode:

+Z (pure galvanized):
Standard corrosion protection for general conditions.
+ZF (zinc-iron):
Improved coating adhesion and increased resistance to mechanical stress.
+ZA (zinc-aluminium):
Optimized resistance in atmospheric environments.

In addition, S420GD is characterized by a homogeneous microstructure, good weldability and precise dimensional accuracy, which enables economical further processing in cutting, bending and welding processes.

Applications

Thanks to its outstanding mechanical properties and reliable corrosion protection, S420GD is used in a wide range of construction projects:

Load-bearing steel structures: Frames, columns and beams in industrial halls, bridges and high-bay warehouses.
Bridge and infrastructure components: Wooden truss bridges, edge angles and roadway girders with high load requirements.
Roof and façade systems: trapezoidal, standing seam and profiled sheets for commercial and administrative buildings.
Drainage systems: gutters, downpipes and gutters that perform their function permanently even in aggressive climatic zones.
