Chemical properties

Hot-dip galvanized steel S550GD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a high-strength structural steel that has been specially developed for demanding structural and construction applications. With the material number 1.0531, S550GD has a minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of 550 N/mm², placing it in the top strength class of hot-dip galvanized structural steels. Hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with EN 10346 ensures a homogeneous, tightly sealed zinc coating that permanently protects the steel against corrosion. Available coating systems are +Z (pure zinc), +ZF (zinc-iron), +ZA (zinc-aluminum), +ZM (zinc-magnesium) and +AZ (aluminum-zinc). This variety enables precise adaptation to different environmental conditions and technical requirements in the construction industry.

Properties

S550GD impresses with an outstanding combination of high strength, good formability and long-lasting corrosion protection. The most important mechanical properties can be found in the table above.

The hot-dip galvanized protective layer forms a sacrificial anode that effectively protects the base material from atmospheric and chemical corrosion. While the base coating +Z is designed for temperate environments, +ZF and +ZA offer improved adhesion and increased passive layer formation in industrial atmospheres respectively. +ZM increases corrosion resistance in marine or saline zones, and +AZ combines high temperature resistance with reliable corrosion protection – ideal for components in thermally stressed areas. In addition, S550GD has a homogeneous microstructure, excellent weldability and precise dimensional accuracy, which ensures efficient production in cutting, bending and welding processes.

+Z (pure galvanized):
Standard corrosion protection for general conditions.
+ZF (zinc-iron):
Improved coating adhesion and increased resistance to mechanical stress.
+ZA (zinc-aluminium):
Optimized resistance in atmospheric environments.
+ZM (zinc-magnesium):
Extended protection in maritime and saline zones through passivating behavior.
+AZ (aluminum-zinc):
Combination of heat resistance and corrosion protection, ideal for high surface temperatures.

In addition, S420GD is characterized by a homogeneous microstructure, good weldability and precise dimensional accuracy, which enables economical further processing in cutting, bending and welding processes.

Applications

Thanks to its high mechanical performance and robust corrosion protection, S550GD can be used in a wide range of construction applications:

Load-bearing steel structures: Supports, beams and frames in industrial halls, bridges and high-bay warehouses.
Highly stressed components: Crane runways, walkways and heavy-duty frames where maximum strength and wear resistance are required.
Roof and façade systems: profiled and trapezoidal sheets for commercial and public buildings with high structural requirements.
Infrastructure components: Tunnel linings, noise barriers and technical installations in transportation and civil engineering.
Solar mounting systems & substructures: Large module supports and racks that require both high load-bearing capacity and weather resistance.

The choice of a suitable coating makes it possible to maximize the service life of the components and minimize maintenance cycles.

Conclusion

With its minimum yield strength of 550 N/mm² and a tensile strength of at least 560 N/mm², the hot-dip galvanized steel S550GD in accordance with EN 10346 offers an excellent material solution for highly stressed construction applications. The wide range of coating variants allows it to be precisely matched to a wide variety of environmental and load conditions – from temperate climates to highly corrosive or thermally stressed areas of application. S550GD combines maximum load-bearing capacity, proven corrosion protection and excellent processing properties, making it the first choice for modern, performance-oriented infrastructure and industrial construction projects.
