Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX220YD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a highly developed thin sheet material that has been specially designed for demanding cold forming processes. The designation “Y” stands for steels without embedded intermediate atoms, whose alloy composition and purity are particularly strictly controlled. This special steel fine structure allows significantly improved r-values (plastic anisotropy) and n-values (strain hardening exponent) to be achieved compared to conventional deep-drawing steels. The integrated hot-dip galvanizing process also ensures a homogeneous, protective zinc coating that reliably protects the material even in highly corrosive environments. The coating variants +Z (pure zinc), +ZF (zinc-iron), +ZA (zinc-aluminum), +ZM (zinc-magnesium), +AZ (aluminum-zinc) and +AS (aluminum-silicon) are available, with which the corrosion protection can be specifically adapted to the respective application conditions.

Properties

HX180YD is characterized by an outstanding combination of the following features:

Optimized forming properties: Thanks to the Y-steel technology, HX220YD has particularly high r-values (> 1.5), which ensure uniform flow behavior in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Local differences in thickness and the associated material weakening are thus significantly reduced.
Homogeneous hardening (n-value ≥ 0.17): A high strain hardening exponent ensures a uniform increase in yield hardness during elongation, which reduces the risk of cracking and stabilizes the deep drawing process.
Mechanical properties: Usual Rp0.2 values are around 220 N/mm², the tensile strength is typically 340-420 N/mm². The elongation at break A80 is ≥ 32 %, which means that even complex multi-stage forming is possible with low residual risks.

Hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with EN 10346: The zinc coating protects the sheet metal permanently against corrosion. The different types of coating offer customized advantages:

+Z: Basic corrosion protection for moderate environments
+ZF: Increased layer adhesion and mechanical resistance
+ZA: Improved passive formation for industrial atmospheres
+ZM: Excellent protection in maritime or salty environments
+AZ: Combination of heat resistance with corrosion protection
+AS: Highest resistance to extreme temperatures and aggressive media

Applications

Thanks to its superior formability and reliable corrosion protection, HX220YD is used in many industrial sectors:

Automotive industry: Production of deep-drawn interior and structural components such as door and trunk linings, engine compartment covers and complex sheet metal body parts with tight tolerances.
Household appliances: housings and interior walls of washing machines, dishwashers and refrigerators, where uniform sheet thicknesses and flawless surfaces are required.
Electrical and electronics industry: Production of housings, shielding plates and chassis that require high dimensional accuracy and corrosion resistance.
Furniture and interior design: Design-oriented, intricately shaped components for office and contract furniture that require precise contouring and a high surface quality.
Mechanical and plant engineering: covers, cladding and deep-drawn components with complex geometries and tight bending radii.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX220YD in accordance with EN 10346 offers an outstanding combination of improved deep-drawing properties, homogeneous hardening and long-lasting corrosion protection. The controlled alloy purity and the absence of embedded intermediate atoms enable optimized r- and n-values, which guarantee the highest possible dimensional stability and surface quality even in complicated multi-stage forming processes. With a choice of six coating variants, the steel can be precisely adapted to a wide range of environmental and process conditions – a decisive advantage for applications in the automotive, household appliance, electrical, furniture and mechanical engineering industries, where the highest demands are placed on precision, service life and corrosion resistance.
