S235JR (1.0038) – The versatile standard structural steel according to DIN EN 10025-2

The unalloyed structural steel S235JR is the universal base material for modern steel and mechanical engineering. It combines high availability with excellent cost-effectiveness and offers engineers a balanced ratio between strength, toughness and workability.

Material properties for construction

Mechanical specifications & delivery conditions

S235JR already offers stable mechanical properties in its standard state. Depending on the requirements for the microstructure and further processing, various delivery conditions are available:

+AR (As Rolled): Directly from the rolling mill – the most economical solution for standard applications.
+N (Normalizing rolled/annealed): Creates a fine-grained structure for uniform properties and improved formability.
+M (Thermomechanically rolled): Targeted strength control with simultaneously high toughness through controlled cooling processes.

Weldability and processing

For engineers, excellent weldability is crucial. Thanks to its low carbon equivalent (CEV), all common welding processes (MAG, MIG, manual arc welding) can be used without complex preheating. This minimizes the risk of cold cracking and reduces manufacturing time in the workshop – a direct cost advantage for purchasing departments.

Brittle fracture resistance

With a guaranteed impact strength of 27 J at +20 °C (grade group JR), the steel offers sufficient toughness against brittle failure under dynamic loads in the usual temperature range.

Areas of Application

Thanks to its versatility, the S235JR is at home in almost all areas of technology:

Steel and structural engineering: profiles, sheets and beams for hall and bridge constructions.
Maschinenbau: Grundplatten, Gestelle und Maschinenfundamente.
Brückenbau (tragende Elemente, Verankerungen)
Anlagenbau: Rahmenstrukturen, Bühnen und Geländersysteme.
Construction industry: Composite beams and secondary components.

Why S235JR? – The conclusion for technology and purchasing

Efficiency meets reliability: S235JR is the “all-purpose weapon” in steel construction. While engineers appreciate its predictable mechanical properties and straightforward processing, purchasing departments benefit from its global availability and optimal price-performance ratio.
