Structural Steel S355J2 – Maximum Safety Under Mechanical Load and Cold Conditions

High-performance flat steel for demanding welded structures
When outdoor structures or those subject to dynamic loads must remain absolutely reliable—even at low temperatures—the unalloyed quality steel S355J2 (per DIN EN 10025-2) is the premier choice. Available as flat steel with a nominal thickness of up to 30 mm, this material combines high static load-bearing capacity with excellent resistance to brittle fracture, making it the standard for heavy steel construction, bridge building, and the manufacture of vehicles and cranes.

Performance characteristics and mechanical properties (up to 30 mm)

Guaranteed strength: A minimum yield strength of 355 MPa is available for thicknesses up to 16 mm. In the range from 16 mm up to our maximum supply thickness of 30 mm, this figure is a reliable 345 MPa. Tensile strength falls within a secure range of 470 to 630 MPa.
Guaranteed toughness at sub-zero temperatures (quality grade J2): S355J2 ensures an impact energy of at least 27 joules at a test temperature of -20°C. This offers designers maximum safety against brittle failure under extreme weather conditions.
Excellent weldability: Despite its higher strength, the steel exhibits excellent weldability thanks to a strictly controlled carbon equivalent and can be processed reliably using all standard methods.

Flexibility regarding delivery condition and technical options

Customized delivery condition: Mechanical properties are controlled entirely according to your specifications. We supply the flat steel in the classic as-rolled condition (+AR), or in the thermomechanically rolled (+M) or normalizing-rolled condition (+N).
Versatile factory-fitted options: Upon request, the material can be perfectly tailored to your manufacturing processes. Options include, for example, an optimized chemical composition for subsequent hot-dip galvanizing, guaranteed suitability for crack-free bending, or non-destructive testing—such as ultrasonic testing—for nominal thicknesses of 6 mm and above.
