Chemical properties

CR5 (super deep-drawing quality) in accordance with VDA 239-100: Tailor-made for exceptional deep-drawing requirements

CR5, also known as super deep drawing grade, represents the highest quality level among deep drawing grades according to the VDA 239-100 standard. This steel was specially developed for applications that require particularly deep and complex forming processes. Thanks to its exceptional properties, CR5 is the first choice for high-precision formed parts and demanding production processes.

Properties and material composition
The outstanding performance of CR5 is based on its extremely low yield strength, high elongation and exceptional forming properties. These are achieved through a precise chemical composition and an optimized manufacturing route.

Maximum deep-drawing capability: The very low carbon content and fine-grained microstructure enable extreme deep-drawing and complex forming processes without the risk of cracking or wrinkling.
Outstanding surface quality: CR5 has an extremely homogeneous and smooth surface, which is ideal for demanding paintwork or galvanic coatings.
Outstanding ageing resistance: CR5 remains permanently malleable and stable thanks to the bonding of interstitial elements such as carbon and nitrogen with stabilizers such as titanium or niobium.
Excellent dimensional accuracy: Thanks to precise rolling technologies, CR5 is manufactured with extremely low tolerances, which facilitates processing in high-precision production environments.

Areas of application
CR5 is used in industries where the deepest drawing processes and most complex geometries are required. Typical applications include:

Outer skin parts in the automotive industry: components such as fenders, hoods and doors that have to meet the highest requirements in terms of formability and surface quality.
Precision molded parts: Applications in the electronics and household appliance industries where high dimensional accuracy and perfection are required.
Medical devices: Production of complex housings and components that require both precise forming and aesthetic perfection.

Advantages compared to other grades
CR5 significantly surpasses the properties of CR3 (special deep-drawing grade) and CR4 (special drawing grade), especially when it comes to extreme forming requirements. Thanks to its even lower yield strength and outstanding ductility, CR5 is ideal for multi-stage deep drawing applications and components with extremely tight tolerances.

Conclusion
CR5 (super deep-drawing grade) in accordance with VDA 239-100 sets standards for demanding deep-drawing applications. Its exceptional formability, perfect surface quality and high dimensional accuracy make it the preferred choice for high-precision molded parts. Whether in the automotive industry, electronics production or in specialized areas such as medical technology – CR5 offers the optimum conditions for components with the highest quality requirements and geometric challenges.
