Hot-dip galvanized steel: DX53D according to DIN EN 10346

The hot-dip galvanized steel DX53D in accordance with standard 10346 is a modern material that has been specially developed for demanding cold forming processes. With the material number 1.0951 (formerly 1.0355), this steel belongs to the soft steels and is classified as a deep-drawing grade. The integrated hot-dip galvanizing process applies a durable zinc coating that provides reliable corrosion protection and makes the steel resistant even under adverse environmental conditions. In addition, the wide range of coating variants – +Z, +ZF, +ZA, +ZM, +AZ and +AS – ensure individual adaptation to specific requirements in different manufacturing processes.

Properties

The DX53D impresses above all with its outstanding deep-drawing capability, which is due to a specially optimized soft steel structure. This property enables uniform forming behavior and a minimal springback effect, which is particularly advantageous in the production of complex and delicate components. In addition to the excellent formability, hot-dip galvanizing creates a robust protective layer that provides the steel with lasting protection against corrosion and thus contributes to an extended service life of the end products. The combination of technical precision, flexible coating options and reliable corrosion protection makes DX53D an ideal material for high-precision applications.

Applications

Due to its excellent forming properties, the DX53D is used in numerous industrial sectors. Applications requiring precise deep-drawing processes are found particularly in the automotive industry, in mechanical engineering and in the manufacture of household appliances. Sophisticated body structures, intricate components and complex parts are produced here, which require both high dimensional accuracy and stable load-bearing capacity. Thanks to the variable coating options, the surface finish can also be adapted to the respective environmental conditions and specific customer requirements.

Comparison with DX51D and DX54D

In direct comparison with the related materials in the series, the DX53D is particularly well-balanced. While the DX51D is typically used as a machine folding grade and is primarily designed for general cold forming applications, the focus of the DX53D is on optimizing deep drawing processes. This special focus enables superior formability and precision in complex forming processes.

The DX54D, on the other hand, has a lower yield strength and tensile strength. These mechanical properties make it even easier to form, which in some cases can lead to improved processability. However, this higher flexibility also has a disadvantage: the lower strength values tend to result in a lower load-bearing capacity of the components, which means that applications with high load requirements are less suitable. The DX54D is therefore particularly suitable for applications in which extremely high formability is paramount and lower mechanical stresses can be tolerated. In comparison, the DX53D offers a good balance between good formability and a higher mechanical load capacity – a decisive advantage for demanding deep drawing processes.

Conclusion

In summary, hot-dip galvanized steel DX53D in accordance with standard 10346 is a versatile and modern material that impresses with its outstanding deep-drawing quality and reliable corrosion protection. The combination of optimized mechanical properties and variable coating options enables individual adaptation to diverse production requirements. Compared to related materials such as DX51D and DX54D, DX53D is characterized by its ideal balance between formability and resilience. Companies that want to produce precise and resilient deep-drawn components therefore benefit from the technical advantages of this material, which meets both current and future challenges in industrial production.
