Hot-dip galvanized steel S220GD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a quality material specially developed for load-bearing and non-load-bearing applications in the construction industry. With the material number 1.0241, S220GD belongs to the group of structural steels whose minimum yield strength Rp0.2 is 220 N/mm². The hot-dip galvanizing process applies a robust zinc coating that protects the steel from corrosion in the long term. The available coatings +Z (pure galvanized), +ZF (zinc-iron), +ZA (zinc-aluminium), +ZM (zinc-magnesium) and +AZ (aluminium-zinc) allow specific adaptation to different environmental conditions and set standards in terms of durability and aesthetics.
Properties
S220GD is characterized by a balanced combination of mechanical and physical properties. The minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of 220 N/mm² and a typical tensile strength of 300-430 N/mm² guarantee sufficient strength with consistently good formability. The guaranteed elongation at break of at least 22 % enables safe further processing in profiling and bending processes. Thanks to the hot-rolled base material, the steel offers a homogeneous microstructure with uniform strength distribution.
The hot-dip galvanizing effectively protects S220GD against weathering and chemical aggressors. While the standard +Z coating already provides solid basic corrosion protection, +ZF and +ZA increase the adhesion of the zinc coating and improve resistance in moderately corrosive environments. In addition, +ZM offers improved passive layer formation, which extends the protective effect in more aggressive atmospheres. With +AZ, a variant is available that offers exceptionally high protection against corrosion and temperature stress thanks to a balanced aluminum-zinc coating.
Applications
S220GD is used in a wide range of applications in all areas of the construction industry. Typical applications include roof and façade systems (trapezoidal and standing seam profiles), drainage channels, downpipes and profiled sheets for wall cladding. S220GD also meets the highest requirements for load-bearing capacity and durability in hall and hall apron construction, lightweight halls and in the manufacture of steel structures and beams. In the field of solar mounting systems and the roofing of logistics centers, this steel scores points for its corrosion resistance and structural flexibility.
Conclusion
Hot-dip galvanized steel S220GD in accordance with EN 10346 is a high-performance structural steel that reliably combines strength and corrosion protection with a minimum yield strength of 220 N/mm² and a robust hot-dip galvanizing. Thanks to the wide range of coating options, the material can be individually adapted to different environmental and application conditions. In roof, façade and trapezoidal profiles as well as in a wide range of steel structures, S220GD impresses with its long service life and good formability. This makes it an economical and technically mature solution for modern construction projects.
