Chemical properties

Hot-dip galvanized steel S250GD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard is a high-quality structural steel that has been specially developed for use in the construction industry. With the material number 1.0242, S250GD has a minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of 250 N/mm² and is therefore classified in the medium strength classes of hot-dip galvanized structural steels. The EN 10346 standard not only specifies the chemical composition and mechanical properties, but also defines the hot-dip galvanizing process that creates a uniformly protective zinc coating on the steel surface. The available coatings +Z, +ZF, +ZA, +ZM, +AZ and +AS enable precise adaptation to different environmental conditions and load scenarios.

Properties

S250GD is characterized by a balanced combination of strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. The minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of 250 N/mm² and a tensile strength in the range of 360-510 N/mm² guarantee a reliable load-bearing capacity with sufficient ductility. Thanks to the hot-dip galvanized surface, the steel achieves long-lasting corrosion protection, making it resistant even in aggressive climates and industrial environments.

The different cover variants offer specific advantages:

+Z (pure galvanized):
Standard corrosion protection for general conditions.
+ZF (zinc-iron):
Improved coating adhesion and increased resistance to mechanical stress.
+ZA (zinc-aluminium):
Optimized resistance in atmospheric environments.
+ZM (zinc-magnesium):
Extended protection in maritime and saline zones through passivating behavior.
+AZ (aluminum-zinc):
Combination of heat resistance and corrosion protection, ideal for high surface temperatures.
+AS (aluminum-silicon):
Especially for applications with extreme temperature influences and high corrosion loads.

Applications

S250GD is used in almost all construction applications where both load-bearing capacity and corrosion protection are required. Typical fields of application are

Roof and façade systems: trapezoidal and standing seam profiles for residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
Drainage components: Gutters, downpipes and rainwater collectors.
Load-bearing structures: Lightweight halls, carports and canopies.
Container and hall construction: profiled sheets for wall and ceiling elements.
Solar mounting systems: Frames and substructures with a long service life and low maintenance.

The ability to match the coating precisely to the ambient conditions means that maintenance cycles can be extended and overall life cycle costs reduced.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel S250GD in accordance with EN 10346 combines a medium strength class with first-class corrosion protection and ease of processing. Thanks to the minimum yield strength of 250 N/mm² and the wide range of coating options, S250GD can be used flexibly in numerous construction applications – from roofs and façades to load-bearing lightweight structures. Construction companies and planners benefit from its long service life, excellent formability and individual adaptability to specific environmental requirements. S250GD is therefore an economical and sustainable solution for modern construction projects.
