Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX340LAD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard (material number 1.0933) is a high-strength, micro-alloyed structural steel that has been specially developed for highly stressed structural and body components in the automotive industry. Its outstanding mechanical properties result from the targeted micro-alloying with niobium, titanium and vanadium, which produces a fine-grained microstructure and thus enables a significant increase in strength combined with good toughness. The continuous hot-dip galvanizing process in accordance with EN 10346 gives the steel strip a homogeneous, tightly sealed zinc coating that provides reliable long-term protection against corrosion.

Properties

HX340LAD combines high strength, ductility and corrosion resistance in a unique way. The micro-alloy results in a fine grain structure, whereby a minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of at least 340 N/mm² is achieved. Typical tensile strengths are in the range of 410-510 N/mm², with an elongation at break A80 of at least 21 %. The precipitation of finely dispersed niobium, titanium and vanadium carbides stabilizes the microstructure and ensures high notched impact strength, even at low temperatures. At the same time, the material remains easy to form and weld. The hot-dip galvanized zinc coating is created in a continuous dipping process in which the coil is dipped several times in a liquid zinc bath and then cooled in a controlled manner. Depending on requirements, coating alloys such as pure zinc (+Z), zinc-iron (+ZF), zinc-aluminium (+ZA), zinc-magnesium (+ZM), aluminium-zinc (+AZ) or aluminium-silicon (+AS) can be used to optimize adhesion, passive protection and temperature resistance.

Applications

In the automotive industry, HX340LAD is primarily used where maximum strength, low weight and demanding corrosion resistance are required. Typical applications are

Cross members and crash elements: Thanks to high energy absorption and notch impact strength, they improve occupant safety in crash scenarios.
Chassis and chassis components: Lightweight profiles with an optimized strength-to-mass ratio enable a reduction in weight and increase driving dynamics and fuel efficiency.
B-pillars and roof cross members: Narrow profile geometries and complex forming processes can be realized while maintaining high rigidity.
Seat rails and floor beams: Permanent loads and vibration stresses require lasting resistance to fatigue and corrosion.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX340LAD (1.0933) in accordance with EN 10346 combines the advantages of a micro-alloyed fine-grain structure with durable zinc corrosion protection. With a minimum yield strength of around 340 N/mm², tensile strengths of up to 510 N/mm² and high notched impact strength, it offers a technically mature solution for safety and weight-optimized body and structural components in the automotive industry. The flexible selection of coating alloys allows precise adaptation to a wide range of environmental and load conditions and makes HX340LAD a future-proof choice of material for modern vehicle concepts.
