Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX420LAD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard (material number 1.0935) is a high-strength, micro-alloyed structural steel that has been specially developed for extremely stressed body and structural components in the automotive industry. Its outstanding performance is based on the targeted alloying with niobium, titanium and vanadium, which ensure a fine-grained steel structure and thus enable the combination of high strength, resilient toughness and good formability. The subsequent hot-dip galvanizing is carried out in a continuous dipping process in which the strip sheet is passed several times through a liquid zinc bath and cooled in a controlled manner. This creates a closed, homogeneous zinc layer that protects the material from corrosion in the long term and gives it impressive durability in harsh operating conditions.

Properties

In its untreated state, HX420LAD is characterized by a minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of around 420 N/mm², which is achieved by the very fine precipitation of niobium, titanium and vanadium compounds. The typical tensile strength Rm ranges from 470 to 590 N/mm², while the elongation at break A80 does not fall below 17 %. These characteristic values prove that, despite its high strength, the steel is sufficiently ductile to master complex forming processes with tight bending radii without the risk of brittle cracking. The fine-grained microstructure, stabilized by microalloying, reduces grain growth even under thermal stress and ensures high notched impact strength, even at low temperatures. The hot-dip galvanized surface in accordance with EN 10346 gives the material a uniformly thick zinc coating, the composition of which can be adjusted depending on environmental and process requirements in order to further optimize adhesion and passive protection and to remain permanently effective even at high temperatures.

Applications

In the automotive industry, HX420LAD is primarily used where the highest strength requirements have to be combined with complex forming processes and long-term corrosion resistance. Highly stressed cross members and crash elements are made from this steel in order to maximize occupant safety in impact scenarios through high energy absorption and improved notch impact strength. Reinforcements in B- and A-pillars benefit from the narrow deep-drawing contour and high rigidity, which can be further optimized by thermal post-treatment in the paint oven. Chassis and chassis components gain in lightweight efficiency thanks to the optimized strength-to-weight ratio, which has a positive effect on driving dynamics and fuel consumption. Seat rails and floor beams, which are exposed to constant fatigue and corrosion loads, impress with their exceptional durability and consistent performance over the entire life cycle of the vehicle.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX420LAD (1.0935) in accordance with EN 10346 offers a pioneering material solution for modern vehicle concepts in which safety, lightweight construction and durability are required in equal measure. The microalloy with niobium, titanium and vanadium enables a minimum yield strength of around 420 N/mm² with good ductility, while the homogeneous zinc coating ensures reliable long-term protection against corrosion. The combination of high strength, excellent formability and flexible corrosion protection makes HX420LAD the first choice for safety-critical, weight-optimized and corrosion-stressed body and structural components in the automotive industry.
