Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX460LAD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard (material number 1.0990) is a high-strength, micro-alloyed structural steel that was developed specifically for extremely stressed structural and body components in the automotive industry. The addition of niobium, titanium and vanadium results in a fine-grained microstructure, which also enables high strength and good toughness. The subsequent hot-dip galvanizing is carried out in a continuous dipping process in which the strip sheet is passed several times through a liquid zinc bath and then cooled in a controlled manner. This creates a homogeneous, dense zinc layer that protects the material from corrosion in the long term and thus ensures a long service life even under aggressive environmental conditions.

Properties

HX460LAD is characterized by a remarkable minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of around 460 N/mm², which is achieved by the precipitation of finely dispersed niobium, titanium and vanadium compounds. Its characteristic tensile strength is in the range of 500 to 640 N/mm², while the elongation at break A80 of at least 15 % guarantees sufficient ductility for complex forming processes. The fine-grained microstructure, stabilized by the micro-alloyed elements, prevents grain growth even at higher temperatures and contributes to high notched impact strength. Homogeneous hot-dip galvanizing in accordance with EN 10346 produces a uniformly thick zinc coating whose composition – from pure zinc to zinc-magnesium to aluminium-silicon alloys – can be flexibly adjusted for adhesion, passive protection and temperature resistance.

Applications

In the automotive industry, HX460LAD is primarily used where extremely high strength is required in combination with demanding forming processes and durable corrosion protection. Cross members for impact situations, crash box elements and reinforcements in A and B pillars are made from this material in order to maximize occupant safety through high energy absorption and improved notch impact strength. Chassis and chassis technology also benefit from the firm yet malleable profiles, which help to reduce weight and improve driving dynamics and fuel efficiency. Thanks to the micro-alloyed alloy, seat rails and floor beams, which are permanently exposed to changing loads and corrosive influences, deliver high fatigue strength and consistent performance over the entire life cycle of the vehicle.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX460LAD (1.0990) in accordance with EN 10346 offers an outstanding combination of high strength, sufficient ductility and long-lasting corrosion protection. Thanks to the micro-alloyed fine-grain structure with niobium, titanium and vanadium, it achieves a minimum yield strength of around 460 N/mm² and a tensile strength of up to 640 N/mm² without unduly restricting formability. The flexible adaptation of the zinc coating to different environmental and process requirements ensures optimum corrosion resistance, while the excellent mechanical properties make HX460LAD the ideal material choice for safety-critical and weight-optimized body and structural components of modern vehicle concepts.
