Chemical properties

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX500LAD in accordance with the EN 10346 standard (material number 1.0991) is a high-strength, micro-alloyed structural steel that was specially developed for highly stressed structural and body components in the automotive industry. The targeted alloying with small amounts of niobium, titanium and vanadium results in a fine-grained steel structure that makes the material both high-strength and ductile. In the continuous hot-dip galvanizing process, the strip sheet is repeatedly immersed in a liquid zinc bath and then cooled in a controlled manner, resulting in a closed, homogeneous zinc coating. This coating protects the steel against atmospheric and chemical corrosion in the long term, so that even extremely stressed vehicle components achieve a long service life and reliability.

Properties

HX500LAD is characterized by a very high minimum yield strength Rp0.2 of at least 500 N/mm², which is achieved by the precipitation of finely dispersed carbides and nitrates of the microalloying elements. The typical tensile strength is in the range of 530 to 690 N/mm², while the elongation at break A80 is still at least 13 % despite these high strength values. Thanks to the micro-alloyed fine grain structure, grain growth is effectively prevented even under thermal stress, which means that the microstructure remains stable even in hot forming zones. The narrow grain refinement increases the notched impact strength so that the material retains a high level of toughness even at low temperatures. The hot-dip galvanized surface in accordance with EN 10346 ensures uniform corrosion protection; by selecting different coating alloys from pure zinc to zinc-magnesium and aluminium-silicon, adhesion, passive protection and temperature resistance can be precisely adapted to the respective requirements.

Applications

In the automotive industry, HX500LAD is used in areas where maximum strength combined with formability and corrosion resistance are required. The material enables the optimization of energy absorption and lightweight vehicle construction, particularly for safety-relevant components such as cross members in the front and rear, crash box elements and reinforcements in A and B pillars. The combination of a narrow deep-drawing contour and high resilience ensures that complex geometries in interior and exterior body components can be manufactured precisely without the components subsequently losing strength. In addition, HX500LAD is also used in chassis components and load-bearing chassis profiles, where long-term resistance to corrosion and fatigue under changing loads is crucial.

Conclusion

The hot-dip galvanized steel HX500LAD (1.0991) in accordance with EN 10346 offers an excellent combination of extremely high strength, sufficient ductility and long-lasting corrosion protection. With a minimum yield strength of around 500 N/mm², tensile strengths of up to 690 N/mm² and an elongation at break of at least 13%, it meets the most demanding requirements of modern vehicle designs. The micro-alloyed fine-grain structure ensures high notched impact strength even at low temperatures, while the flexible selection of zinc coatings enables precise adaptation to a wide range of environmental and process conditions. This makes HX500LAD the preferred material solution for safety-critical, weight-optimized and corrosion-stressed body and structural components in the automotive industry.
